Every 1 Reads is a bold community-wide effort to have every child in Jefferson County Public Schools reading at or above grade level. Every 1 Reads helps children become better readers. The number of children reading below grade level is now approximately 8.5 percent - down from nearly 20 percent before the Every1Reads initiative started.

My Voice, My Choice 2008!
Kids Voting Metro Louisville (KVML) provides a variety of services across the Louisville metro area. In addition to hosting volunteer-run, kids-only booths right alongside adult booths during November polling, the KVML also supports social studies, service learning and community engagement education in schools. Since literacy is vital to citizenship, their programs also help improve students' reading skills!
As part of the My Voice, My Choice 2008! project, the staff at KVML has created handbooks for area schools that that will help students meet important core curriculum goals. The program introduces students to social studies and civics concepts through fun classroom activities that draw on reading, writing and math skills and help students get a realistic understanding of community and government.
For more information on how KVML works to improve literacy and civic engagement in Louisville, check out their website or contact them via email or via phone at (502)625-0100 extension 33.
Mayor’s Top Apple Schools
Every 1 Reads Schools of Excellence
Mayor Jerry Abramson created the award in 2006 to honor Every 1 Reads schools of excellence.
To qualify, schools must have virtually all students reading at or above grade level (less than two percent novice readers) or have double-digit improvements in reading scores (reduction in number of novice readers).
“The Mayor’s Top Apple award is a great way to honor students, teachers and principals for the hard work they do each and everyday in the classroom that make the goals we set forward a real possibility,” said Dr. Berman.
The Mayor’s Top Apple Schools award is presented by Sullivan University System.
“We are proud to sponsor the Mayor’s Top Apple Schools award and applaud the accomplishments of the students, teachers and volunteer tutors,” said Glenn Sullivan, president of the Sullivan University System. “We hope these students will establish a lifelong love of learning and reading that will encourage them to pursue higher education.”
Each school will receive a banner, a glass apple handcrafted by artists from the Flame Run Gallery and bookmarks for each student.
A banner featuring all the winners is displayed at the C.B. Young Jr. Service Center, 3001 Crittenden Drive, near the fairgrounds. It will hang on the front of Louisville Metro Hall after the first of the year.
