Every 1 Reads is a bold community-wide effort to have every child in Jefferson County Public Schools reading at or above grade level. Every 1 Reads helps children become better readers. The number of children reading below grade level is now approximately 8.5 percent - down from nearly 20 percent before the Every 1 Reads initiative started.
We have our 10,000 Volunteers!
Congratulations to all of our Every 1 Reads volunteers for helping us reach our goal of 10,000 volunteer tutors and mentors! A community celebration was held to mark the occasion at Gutermuth Elementary the last week in September as volunteer #10,000 signed in for training. This is a great achievement and a fundamental part of getting all of our students reading at grade level. Let's not stop there - encourage friends, family and co-workers to sign up for training!
Every 1 Reads Welcomes New Community Partners
In addition to schools, Every 1 Reads works with a dedicated network of community partners and organizations to achieve our goal of every child reading at grade level. They must complete an application and host several training sessions as part of their commitment to the initiative. We would like to congratulate the following organizations for becoming official Every1Reads endorsed sites and welcome them to the team!
Beecher Terrace Learning Center, Ebenezer Baptist Church, Iroquois Housing Learning Center, Parkway Place Learning Center, Refuge in KY Community Development Corporation, St. Peter Claver and Trinity family Life Center
Every 1 Reads reaches $8 million funding goal!
Thanks to the continued support and dedication of the Louisville community, Every 1 Reads has reached its funding goal of $8 million! This goal could not have been met without the many businesses, organizations, foundations and dedicated individuals who made the goal of $8 million a reality. Congratulations and thank you to all who contributed! Click here to view a current list of Every 1 Reads contributors.
Mayor’s Top Apple Schools
Every 1 Reads Schools of Excellence
Mayor Jerry Abramson created the award in 2006 to honor Every 1 Reads schools of excellence.
To qualify, schools must have virtually all students reading at or above grade level (less than two percent novice readers) or have double-digit improvements in reading scores (reduction in number of novice readers).
“The Mayor’s Top Apple award is a great way to honor students, teachers and principals for the hard work they do each and everyday in the classroom that make the goals we set forward a real possibility,” said Dr. Berman.
The Mayor’s Top Apple Schools award is presented by Sullivan University System.
“We are proud to sponsor the Mayor’s Top Apple Schools award and applaud the accomplishments of the students, teachers and volunteer tutors,” said Glenn Sullivan, president of the Sullivan University System. “We hope these students will establish a lifelong love of learning and reading that will encourage them to pursue higher education.”
Each school will receive a banner, a glass apple handcrafted by artists from the Flame Run Gallery and bookmarks for each student.
A banner featuring all the winners is displayed at the C.B. Young Jr. Service Center, 3001 Crittenden Drive, near the fairgrounds. It will hang on the front of Louisville Metro Hall after the first of the year.
